HIRE ON RELEVANT DELIVERY EVIDENCE

How to evaluate Manufacturing & industrial AI partners

Look for a comparable deployed workflow and the team that actually built it. A client logo or polished model demo is weaker evidence than the integration, acceptance test, failure handling and support record.

Practical AI partner interview guide
Evaluation criterionWhat to ask / useful evidenceWarning sign
Comparable production AI experienceWhich line, product variability and system integrations did you deliver?A deployment walkthrough covering capture conditions, acceptance errors and operational handover.Only curated images and a model accuracy score are shown.
Factory-grade requirements discoveryHow will you define defects and handle changed tooling or suppliers?A reviewed defect taxonomy and a plan for unseen production conditions. The model is assumed to transfer unchanged between workcells.
Transparent hardware and software scopeAre edge devices, MES adapters, annotation and model operations in the quote?Separate items for AI development, interfaces, licences and physical installation dependencies.A low model-build fee excludes the production station and reviewer workflow.
Operator-ready maintenanceCan our staff inspect a failed inference and restore the last approved release?Documented diagnostics, a rollback exercise and named shift-side ownership.A developer must remotely intervene whenever a camera or model changes.
TRY THE WORKFLOW BEFORE THE COMMITMENT

What should you ask for in a demo or free trial?

  1. 01Check comparable AI work
  2. 02Test a representative case
  3. 03Compare the full proposal
  4. 04Agree acceptance & exit

Ask whether a no-cost demonstration, sandbox trial or sample-data evaluation is available. A free consultation does not mean free implementation; many custom AI pilots are paid. Confirm any trial limit, data handling, ownership of outputs and charges before supplying material.

Make the demonstration relevant: Assist visual inspection

Bring this evidence
Real production images, severity taxonomy, part revision and capture conditions.
Ask to see this result
A station workflow with retained evidence and controlled review categories.
Introduce this failure
Image accuracy is reported while good-part rejection and handling delays are ignored.
Discuss acceptance
Defect escapes, false rejects and inspection cycle time by product family.
Before a trial starts, agree
  • One workflow, a representative sample and a named reviewer.
  • What is free, what is paid, usage limits and when billing begins.
  • Access permissions, retention, deletion and permission to use sample data.
  • The acceptance evidence, deliverables, ownership and the exit path.

  1. 01Define the AI-assisted production decision and required response time.
  2. 02Inspect prior factory AI deployments with comparable products and interfaces.
  3. 03Approve representative defect labels, image conditions and chronological machine data.
  4. 04Test MES integration, overrides, rejected records and line recovery.
  5. 05Separate edge hardware, inference, annotation, licences and support charges.
  6. 06Check accelerator ownership and revalidation for tooling or product changes.
  7. 07Train shift staff on uncertain findings, overrides and diagnostics.
  8. 08Accept station documentation, evaluation evidence and a tested rollback package.

What should the proposal commit to?

Delivery and acceptance commitments
MilestoneEvidence required for acceptance
Characterize the stationProduction and quality teams agree what must improve and what must not worsen.
Build independent quality evidenceCritical-error categories and acceptance thresholds are agreed by quality engineering.
Run without changing dispositionFalse rejection, escapes and cycle-time results are accepted together.
Release with variant controlAn engineering change cannot silently inherit the old acceptance decision.
Confirm the commercial terms

Separate fixed scope, change requests, external subscriptions, support coverage and warranty fixes. Confirm source-code and data ownership, access to accounts, documentation, training, acceptance responsibility and an exit handover.

MAKE THE AI SERVICE OPERABLE

Staff training, documentation & handover

Name the people who will operate the AI workflow after launch. Put the following deliverables into the statement of work, with an acceptance owner and a separately identified training or handover allowance.

Staff training & adoption

  • Teach operators to distinguish a suspected defect from an accepted quality disposition.
  • Have maintenance staff restore a prior runtime after a simulated camera or model failure.

Documents & technical assets

  • Defect dictionary, input schema and production-system mappings.
  • Evaluation by shift, variant and capture condition with agreed acceptance thresholds.
  • Edge installation, release approval, rollback and station troubleshooting instructions.

Support & maintenance

  • Assign an owner for camera changes, input drift and failed MES writes.
  • Price ongoing model checks and qualification of new variants separately from ordinary infrastructure support.

AI partner evaluation FAQs

What experience should a manufacturing AI partner show?

Request an end-to-end production example with representative variants, operator review and MES or maintenance integration. Have the proposed engineers explain false rejects, recovery and what they actually delivered. Useful evidence includes a deployment walkthrough covering capture conditions, acceptance errors and operational handover. Ask the proposed team which deployment and support responsibilities they personally held.

How do we avoid buying a pilot that cannot scale?

Require a tested deployment package, configuration ownership and validation on normal production variation. Price each added workcell or product family with explicit reusable and new work. Teach operators to distinguish a suspected defect from an accepted quality disposition. Price ongoing model checks and qualification of new variants separately from ordinary infrastructure support.

How do we test a manufacturing AI partner on changeovers and failed MES writes?

Run normal production variation through the demonstration, including a part changeover and a good part resembling a defect. Inspect false rejects, missed defects and station response time rather than an aggregate accuracy score. Reject a simulated MES write and ask the engineers to recover the record without duplication. Require a clear division of responsibility for model configuration, camera changes, edge rollback and variant qualification.
